MSc Practicums

This project requires a research and development effort

1. The Smart Building
A research Project that requires a thorough analysis of the localisation techniques for smart buildings.
What we require is:
* An understanding of the accuracy of these systems (to what extent can they determine exactly where you are standing in the building).
* How they process real time queries (where am I standing right at this second?)

As the School has a number of UbiSense installations, we should also look to build a system to demonstrate these levels of accurracy and speed of process real time queries.

Project #2 involves a lot of analysis but will also include a small element of programming inside a case study.
[Also suitable for CAIS3 students]

2. An Evaluation of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Markup for Sensor Data
Through a series of case studies (supplied by me), the goal is to evaluate the usefulness of OGC for sensor data management
What we require is:
* How is markup applied, what structure does it take, when is it suitable
* How can we use OGC tools to integrate 2 sets of sensor streams

This might involve creating a desirable set of properties that is required by an XML language for marking up sensor data, querying it, integrating. This would provide the template by which one could evaluate OGC.

3rd Year & 4th Year Project Ideas

Both project ideas below can be customised for 3rd year or 4th year students.
Both projects involve XML and java. You *must* be able to program!

1. A Template generator.
A program that reads a sensor stream and generates a suitable Template file for it.
It would involve splitting the stream into sections and each section into individual records. Then a corresponding Schema would be created and the mappings from stream to schema would be included in the template. The idea would be that a knowledge worker can feed a sample file into a program and, using a GUI, identify the key components of the stream.

2. An XPath web interface based on a template and schema.
Once the template and schema are generated, a program that would have a GUI allowing the knowledge worker to select specific values. The selections made by the KW would then be translated into XPath for use by our liveSensor system.
