 Interaction Design for Novel Multimedia Applications   (1998- )
[current position] Interaction design, group discussion organisation and subsequent usability studies for novel demonstrators and deployed systems at Centre for Digital Video Processing since 1999. Designed interaction strategies include:
  • Web-based multimedia applications
    • Communal Online VCR with recording and keyframe-based content browsing features
    • Daily news story archive for searching, browsing, playing, recommendation of news videos
    • Video searching/browsing system based on simple semantic features (indoor/outdoor, speech, monologue, music, landscape/cityscape, text overlay) and ASR text
    • Video searching/browsing system using relevance feedback based on keyframes and semantic features
    • A series of object-based searching/browsing systems that allow the user to interact with automatically detected objects within video content
    • Photo-visualisation for LifeLogging data - leveraging automatic determination of novelty and events captured by SenseCam wearable camera
    • Museum artefact browsing interfaces that uses novel object-matching technique
    • Video blogging interface design - Web interface design for blogging/photoware systems that incorporate automatic and semi-automatic indexing techniques
    • LifeLogging application for reviewing a day's SenseCam photos
  • Mobile multimedia applications
    • PDA interface for news video access, reducing intensive user-interaction by automatic recommendation of news stories
    • Mobile access to personal photo management
    • Multi-touch camcorder UI for recording and annotation
  • Tabletop interfaces - identifying various issues (workspace awareness, division of work among multiple users and coordination), design space construction followed by the design of novel TableTop interfaces that supports these issues
  • Interactive TV interface design for multimedia
    • Incorporating various content-based multimedia techniques to interactive TV
    • Design solutions for balancing between technology complexity and interface simplicity
  • Multitouch Wall
    • Large public display with multi-touch capability (2009 - )

I have been the recipient of the research student full scholarship during my PhD course.

Postgraduate Prize runner-up 1997, by Library & Information Research Group (LIRG), U.K.
My M.Sc dissertation (at School of Information & Media, Robert Gordon University, U.K.) was one of the runners-up at LIRG Postgraduate Prize 97, and was highly commended by the Group (see IIS newsletter Inform no.199, November 1997).

College Four-year Full Scholarship 1990-1995, Soong Sil University, Seoul, Korea.
I was the (only one) recipient of 4-year full scholarship during the undergraduate course, an award for receiving highest exam results on the entrance of the university among all applicants. I was invited to Blue House by the President of Korea for this achievement (see the old photograph).
