Research Interests

My research is in the areas of Multimedia Information Retrieval, Digital Memories and Mobile Device Access. My phd research was on methods of exploiting linkage densities in WWW graphs to improve ranking in Search Engine results. Since my PhD I have worked within the CDVP initially developing multimedia search engines for image and video. In recent years I have become interested in Human Digital Memories and have worn a SenseCam since June 2006 (capturing 3.3 million photos as of March 2009). Also, I have an interest in Human Computer Interaction, especially for mobile devices.

My research Interestes can be summarised under the following headings:

  • Human Digital Memories - capturing, storing, understanding, searching, filtering, recommending and providing ubiquitous access to personal digital memories and personal multimedia collections. My work has focused on sensecam data, but also GPS and human sensing data.
  • MultiMedia Information Retrieval - indexing and retrieval of Multimedia data (video and image data). I have been heavily involved in the development of the Físchlár digital video suite (Físchlár-News, Físchlár-TREC, Físchlár-Sheffield and Físchlár-Nursing).
  • Mobile Access to Information - developing search engines to support access to multimedia content on mobile devices is a challenge that I am addressing through the iAd project.
  • WWW search - large Scale Search for WWW data, being the subject of my PhD thesis, is still an area of great interest to me.
  • Digital Library Architectures - with iAd partners in the University of Tromso, I am developing architectures for digital libraries that incorporate content management logic directly into the digital library, reducing user overhead when managing large archives.
  • Person and Environmental Sensing -sensing the person and the environment; developing search infrastructures and retrieval strategies to deal with such sensor streams.

Current Projects

  • iAd - Information Access Disruptions (Norwegian Research Council) - The aim of this seven year project is to target core research for next generation precision, analytics and scale for information retrieval from multimedia content. iAD will be directed by Fast Search & Transfer in collaboration with Schibsted, one of Europe’s largest media companies, Accenture, and leading universities: Cornell University, University College Dublin, Dublin City University, BI Norwegian School of Management and the universities in Tromsø (UiT), Trondheim (NTNU) and Oslo (UiO).
  • InsideOut (NDRC) - "Inside Out" is focused on the development of a next generation gaming system to create a unique learning environment for children. In particular, the project is focused on the area of health awareness and childhood obesity.
  • Zignals (Enterprise Ireland) - tba
  • Stokes Lecturship (SFI) - The Science Foundation Ireland Stokes Professorship and Lectureship Programme (briefly “The Stokes”) is designed to support the strategic planning for increasing the number of research active faculty members in Irish Universities. My lecturship at DCU is sponsored by a SFI Stokes award.
  • Previous Projects I have been involved in:

    07-08, Digital TV Project
Project Manager & Principal Negotiator - of a team of five people (four postdocs and one research assistant).

    06-07, Digital Photo Management Project
Project Manager - of a team of four (three postdocs and one research assistant).

    05-07, Content Annotation
Project Manager - of a variable size team of three postdocs, phd students and research assistants.

    03-06, Mediassist
Postdoctoral Researcher - working on methods to automatically organise personal photo collections.

    00-03, Físchlár II
PhD Student - working on techniques to search, filter, alert and summarise video news programmes.
