- The best speaker-independent, continuous speech recognition with large vocabularies (c. 100,000 words) have w.e.r. or c.20%
- IR on this can compensate as for OCR errors
- Speech processing can also recognise phones more accurately and sub-word retrieval can be as good/better than inaccurate word-based
