There are many options for students who are looking for acommodation in Germany. There are halls of residences and private residences. You normally have to pay about one months rent and a deposit (also a months rent), and sometimes you might have to pay extra costs.
Student halls of residence
Student residences are usually situated quite close to the university. In Saarbrücken one can only rent a room or an appartment for one semester. You then have to find private accomodation. However in Bielefeld, Tübingen and Stuttgart, one can rent student residences for one or two semesters.
The rooms are all of different sizes and prices range from 220DM up to 450DM. IR£ 1 is roughly equal to 2.48DM. It is advised that you apply early, because demand for student residences is high. You can get an application form from the university or you can write a letter and send it to the following adresses.
Private rooms and house-sharing:
If you would prefer to live in private accomodation, then you have to look for it yourself. You can ask the university for a list of private accomodation or you can look at the notice boards around college or in the newspapers.
Prices vary from room to room and you can pay little or a lot!
Youth Hostels:
If when you first arrive in Germany you have no accomodation pre-arranged, then you can stay in a Youth Hostel. They cost approxomately from 25DM to 40DM a night.
