What do our graduates think? Below are the opinions of some of the
graduates of the MSc in Electronic Commerce on their postgraduate experience here at
DCU.
"I found the MSc in E-Commerce a challenging, yet highly rewarding
programme. Modules are delivered by excellent lecturers using a variety
of innovative techniques, including group discussion and industry-relevant
case studies. Coming from a Computing background, I really enjoyed the
business modules, as they provided me with a more rounded view of on-line
business. Apart from the technical knowledge I gained over the course of
the year, I also feel that my communication and presentation skills have
improved immensely. Certainly a productive way in which to spend a year!"

"A very practical, well designed course, which
facilitated and encouraged interdisciplinary learning. I acquired
the requisite skillset for my current position primarily from the
MSc and I think that its focus on industry requirements is the reason
for its success."

"Having a technical background, I was motivated to do the course
because of an interest in the technical subjects such as Cryptography
and Web Design. However, I appreciate that it is important to have
a sound business grounding if you are ever to progress in your chosen
career or start your own company. I found the technical subjects
very interesting and taught in an easy to understand manner. There
was a lot of work involved, but your knowledge of cryptography and
security protocols, along with the aesthetics and usability aspects
of web programming, will be excellent as a result. As for the business
subjects, well I wouldn't say that I am as good at business, but
I would be much happier at giving presentations now than before
I did the course. I also understand much better the essential ingredients
of a good business plan, and what VCs and others look for in a technical
presentation- something too few engineers think about."

"On the course, I learned about the importance
of using technological innovations to generate real-life competitive
advantage. It also helped me to gain a real understanding of the
nuts and bolts behind complex e-Business solutions."

"I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do in the IT industry after
finishing my Degree, but doing the Masters in E-Commerce exposed
me for the first time to Internet Advertising. Now I'm a manager
in a Digital Media company providing online advertising to some
of Ireland's biggest Web sites - and loving it!"

"An important feature of the programme is the
significant role of guest lecturers and the use of industry based
case studies. These elements provided me with not just a theoretical
overview of e-Commerce but also with an invaluable insight into
the practical real-world applications of the subject."

"Overall, I found the Masters in eCommerce a very worthwhile course
and DCU a most challenging environment with a strong entrepreneurial
focus. Emphasis was placed on presentations and group work, which
is great. I can definitely say that I will never again be phased
by having to do a presentation, as I did so many during that year!
Apart from this, I also that found the practicum involving both
business and technical students working on the project was a great
way of stimulating a real-life work environment."

"During my year in the eCommerce Masters at
DCU, I got a good overview of the Electronic Business environment.
Team-based projects, presentations and in-class discussions helped
me gain a good understanding of the main challenges and opportunities
which exist. Using my Marketing and E-Commerce skills, I now work
for Inspiration, an Irish SME who specialise in Online Marketing.
I find the dynamic environment exciting to work in and would recommend
the DCU eCommerce Masters to anyone who has an interest in online
business."

"I think the biggest advantage of the course for me was that it
broadened my way of thinking. With my Marketing degree, I very much
thought in marketing mode and considered it the most important function,
whereas the E-Commerce made me view business in a more holisitic
sense. The Practicum was also a great help because it forced us
to look at business from a real-life point of view and be realistic
about what was achievable and what was not. I have now carried this
vital sense of realism on into my working life, particularly when
trying to adhere to tight marketing budgets."

"In terms of a business Masters, the course
material is very up- to- date and focused on what is going on in
the business world today. The courses are delivered by excellent
lecturers using a variety of techniques, focusing on group discussion,
presentation and project analysis. The technical subjects give business
students an opportunity to grasp the concept of various technologies
and also provide a good base if they want to develop their career
in a technical area. I would recommend this Masters programme to
anyone who is interested in the area of technology and its effect
on the business world today. If a student is unsure about which
way they want to develop their career, it's a good way to spend
a year and become more focused. The course is extremely interesting
and the MEC students even more so!"

"The M.Sc. in E-Commerce lays bare the myth that the Internet is
a panacea for all the ills of the business world. Instead, this
Masters degree points clearly to the real strength of the Internet:
resource savings and increased productivity through the re-engineering
of organisational structures and processes. Valuable modules on
Strategic Thinking, Entrepreneurship, Technical E-commerce and Web
Design, allied with the practical nature of the programme via the
Practicum, give students a solid understanding of the underlying
workings of the Internet. More than anything, the M.Sc. in E-Commerce
explains thoroughly how the Internet can augment an existing business
or alternately be used as a medium to conduct a new business initiative."
