  • EXCITING NEW TAUGHT POSTGRAD PROGRAMMES FOR AUTUMN 2003
The School of Computing is to launch new one year full-time MSc programmes in the expanding areas of Bioinformatics and Security & Forensic Computing (subject to Validation). With the first intake of students in September 2003, these are additional to the School's existing Grad Dip/MSc in IT and MSc in E-Commerce programmes. The two new programmes have been specifically designed to produce graduates with the personal and professional skills required to prosper in these growing industries. Significantly, the MSc in Bioinformatics also comes with major funding support for EU students.
In addition to these programmes, the DCU School of Computing, in conjunction with DCU Business School is to launch a new two-year part-time MSc in E-Commerce(Corporate) at Citywest.
With a practical, industry-oriented focus and excellent graduate employment prospects, DCU will be the only university in the Republic of Ireland to offer taught MSc programmes in these exciting areas.

  • Computing Lecturer Releases New Book: (18th August '03)
The School of Computing's Andy Way has published a new book entitled "Recent Advances in Example-Based Machine Translation" with Michael Carl (IAI, Saarbruecken, Germany).

"Recent Advances in Example-Based Machine Translation" is of relevance to researchers and program developers in the field of Machine Translation and especially Example-Based Machine Translation, bilingual text processing and cross-linguistic information retrieval. It is also of interest to translation technologists and localisation professionals.
"Recent Advances in Example-Based Machine Translation" fills a void, because it is the first book to tackle the issue of EBMT in depth. It gives a state-of-the-art overview of EBMT techniques and provides a coherent structure in which all aspects of EBMT are embedded. Its contributions are written by long-standing researchers in the field of MT in general, and EBMT in particular. This book can be used in graduate-level courses in machine translation and statistical NLP.

  • IRCSET Embark Scholarships - 1st Round Success: (5th August '03)
The School of Computing enjoyed an unprecedented first-round success rate in the IRCSET Embark Scholarships for postgraduate study this June. Initially five applicants to the School were successful and, while one has subsequently decided not to pursue a research degree at this time, two further award holders have since applied, raising the first round take-up for the School for 2003/2004 entry to six. Encouragingly, the scholarship awards have reflected interest across all major research groups in the School and represent a significant contribution to the research strength. The IRCSET awards http://www.ircset.ie/ consist of a generous stipend, fees and some monies towards travel/bench fees. As such, these are highly sought after and competition is tough. The School is pleased to welcome the new Scholarship holders. The limited second round call for these Scholarships closes on August 15th 2003. Students with an excellent Honours degree at primary level, who are interested in pursuing a research degree in the School of Computing, should avail of this opportunity to secure funding. Information on research areas and staff interests within the School is available at http://www.computing.dcu.ie/research
