These proceedings present selected papers from the International Business Informatics
Challenge 2006 as well as selected papers presented at the Business Informatics Workshop held
in September 2006 at Dublin City University (Ireland). The International Business Informatics
Challenge is an annual event which aims to exchange experiences and findings between students
and researchers in Business Informatics and Information Systems and to encourage research in
the field. With these proceedings we provide an indication of the richness of topics in Business
Informatics. Papers include themes such as the role of information technology (IT) in business
process management, the economical impact of IT investment in organisations, strategic information
systems (IS) planning in organisations as well as methods and techniques in IS development. A
balanced mix of theoretical papers and case studies is presented.

ODCSSS Final Report
(20th November '06)
The final report of the Online Dublin Computer Science Summer School (ODCSSS) programme - where
16 undergraduates working in DCU and in UCD on research projects for 12 weeks this Summer, some of
whom were funded by the School of Computing has now been published.
Vacancies in the ODCSSS programme were advertised on a specially created website
http://www.odcsss.ie and mailing lists and
targeted mailings to colleagues in Ireland, Europe and Internationally were used to advertise the
programme. Even with a short application time window, by the closing date we had almost 90
applications from undergraduate students throughout the world. A panel of those involved in ODCSSS
selected 17 students for the programme after independently ranking them by order according to a
series of metrics including, academic results, letters of reference, statement of interest, subject
match, degree match etc. All accepted and most worked for 12 weeks with different academic,
postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers in the two institutions...

Business Innovation and Commercialisation Workshop
(7th November '06)
As part of our new European MSc in Business Informatics
(http://www.computing.dcu.ie/europeanmbi/),
the School of Computing organised a Business Innovation and Commercialisation Workshop on Friday
13th of October. The workshop was held in Glendalough, a beautiful location in County Wicklow with
a rich history. Indeed, the site grew from its beginning in the sixth century to a famous centre of
learning and innovation throughout Europe. This inspiring and stimulating environment provided the
ideal location for our students to work out a real and viable business idea and outline a
commercialisation and business plan. The concept behind this workshop is not only about recognising
good and bad ideas but also how to commercialise and promote an idea. Furthermore, the one day
workshop provided a great team-building event for our students in the European MSc in Business
Informatics.
