Significant Research Boost for the School of Computing: (30th Oct '03)
Science Foundation Ireland have just
announced research funding for a
team of researchers from DCU and UCD to the tune of 5.6M. The research
programme will focus on adaptive information systems and the DCU role
involves the Centre for Digital Video Processing, a collaboration
between Prof. Alan Smeaton from the School of Computing and colleagues
from the School of Electronic Engineering. This is a significant boost
to the research profile of the School, the research centre, and the
University, and brings the total amount of research funding secured by
the CDVP this year, to over 2M (including the CDVP share of this SFI
award, an ATRP2003 award for the MediAssist project, and involvement in
EU FP6 project aceMedia).

Centre for Digital Video Processing hosts CIVR2004: (21 Oct '03)
Image and video storage and retrieval continues to be one of the most
exciting and fastest-growing research areas in the field of multimedia
technology. DCU is hosting the
CIVR2004
(International Conference on Image and Video Retrieval) in July 2004. The
conference is being organised by the
CDVP and the
Call for Papers
has just been made. CIVR2004 aims to provide an international forum
for the discussion of challenges in the fields of image and video
retrieval. CIVR2004 is seeking original high quality submissions
addressing innovative research in the broad field of image and
video retrieval.

School of Computing Celebrates Launch of New M.Sc. Programmes: (15 Oct '03)
On Monday, 6th October, staff from the School of Computing welcomed
the first ever intake of students to its new M.Sc. in Bioinformatics
and M.Sc. in Security & Forensic Computing programmes. Speaking at a
drinks reception in The Hub, Professor Joe Morris, Head of the School
of Computing, welcomed the students and expressed his satisfaction
with the high level of industry and student interest in these
innovative new programmes. Both programmes have attracted students
from a wide variety of backgrounds, with participants coming from
as far afield as China, India and the United Arab Emirates.
