Loggin in Problems

Username / Password / Security / Logon Problems

Username

At registration you were given a Username and Password from Computer Services that will get you into the Library Computer system. This same password will get you into the computer system in the Computer Applications building, but you will need to use a DIFFERENT Username. The Username for the Computer Applications system is made up from the 1st letter in your first name, and then the next 5 letters of your surname and a dash before your classname e.g

If your name was John Smith and you are in CA1 then your Username would be jsmith-ca1

Sinead O'Callaghan in FM2, Username: socall-fm2

James Ryan in CA1: jryan-ca1

Password

If at any time you lose your library password, or it becomes known to someone else, you will need to get it changed by Computer Services (located beside the Henry Gratton building or phone on ext 5007 (01-7005007)). Inform us that you have been assigned a new password and we will adjust your Computing accounts accordingly.

We do NOT recommend changing your password. The original password you receive from registration will be needed in the Library, for your Portal Page Access, and later in the year to check exam timetables and then eventually exam results. It is really important to remember that if you do change your password in Windows it will NOT be automatically changed for Linux; they are two DIFFERENT Operating Systems. If you change both passwords and then forget what they are or if they become compromised, they will both need to be reset. Sometimes there can be a delay with this request so its best not to ask us to do this 10 minutes before your really important exam!

Password Security

Do NOT leave them lying around anwhere visible, or tell anyone what they are. If you want to change it avoid things like 12345 or 54321 just becuase its easy to remember; it's the first thing anyone who wants to get into your account will try, and you would be amazed at the amount of times it works. The best password would be something chosen at random that has nothing to do with your likes, dislikes, pets names, birthday, car registration number etc, but also contains a number somewhere in it such as "ant3lop3" or "5alamander". All this may seem unneccessary as the contents of your account might not appear to be important, but some peoples idea of fun is trying to hack into accounts and then doing malicious things in your name once they have access. Do you really want to submit your web-page for marking only to find it contains nude celebrity pictures where your index should be?

Logon Problems

If you have just logged off, it can take the server up to 10 minutes to realise that you have left the network. If this is the case you may get an error message saying "you are trying to log on to too many workstations simultaneously". If you wait approx 10 mins this will sort itself out. This can also happen if you don't log off the PC you are using properly, eg reboot it. This could leave your account open to abuse. However you will take responsibility for this abuse. Once you have logged off don't leave the PC until it has returned to the login screen. If you're still having problems, Contact us.
